'it is now time to work off the beer and hollandaise. after stopping at the appetite delicatessen (541-617-8885) to pick up a picnic lunch (they'll even lend you a cooler bag), rent a bike and head out skyliners road to phil's trailhead, the starting point of a network of single track just outside town. soft, sometimes sandy trails sweep through pines and sagebrush, broken occasionally by the rocky spines of ancient lava flows. originally just one trail named for the local fat tire figure phil meglasson, the area now has about 100 miles of trails maintained with help from the forest service. most local bicycle shops have rentals, but sunnyside sports (930 nw newport avenue, 541-382-8018) will let you make a latte while you wait. prices start at $15 for a half day on a hard tail bike. if your ride doesn't tire you out, continue west on skyliners for another 7.5 miles, then turn left and follow road 4603 three miles to tumalo falls. it's a short walk to an overlook of the 85-foot falls. nearby bridge creek is the source of bend's drinking water, which many say tastes the best in the state.''
