'why is the national museum of the pacific war (830-997-4379, www.nimitz-museum.org; $5 admission) in the texas hill country? because admiral chester w. nimitz, leader of the pacific fleet in world war ii, was born and raised in fredericksburg. the museum has an impressive collection of air and sea craft, tanks, guns and other items, including a b-25 mitchell bomber, a pt boat and a japanese midget submarine used in the attack on pearl harbor. for local history, drop by the fredericksburg visitor information center (302 east austin street, 830-997-6523) one block off main street. there you can watch a nine-minute dvd about the town as well as get a free map of historic sites, including the many 19th-century 'sunday houses' - small homes built by german farmers to use when they came to town to trade and attend church.''
