As recently as 1970, there were only 15 people living in this tiny village; now, thousands of vacation homes dot the road into town. In the midst of all the growth, you can still find the preserved historic Corolla Village, home to a chapel and a schoolhouse dating to the late 1800's. Don't miss the mammoth red-brick Currituck Beach Lighthouse (252-453-4939), built in 1875. For $6, you can climb the 214 steps to the top and look out north into the Currituck National Wildlife Refuge, where wild horses sometimes roam.''
