the cool kids tackle the highland bowl. it is not served by any lifts and takes anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour to climb 750 feet to its 12,392-foot-high summit with its fearsome 45-degree pitch. the really cool kids do circuits of two or three laps. slightly tamer is deep temerity, a 180-acre bowl that opened last year and gives expert skiers an additional 1,000-foot drop. lunch at the aptly named cloud nine alpine bistro (970-544-3063) 100 yards below the cloud nine chair, with an old ski hut feel and views of the maroon bells. a popular lunch dish is osso bucco with ratatouille and roasted potatoes for $25, soup and salad included.
