Whittier, writer, editor, and prominent abolitionist, lived and wrote here from 1836 until his death in 1892. Whittier composed a number of religious poems, many of which have been set to music and are sung as hymns. He is best known for his many short poems, such as 'the Barefoot Boy' and 'Barbara Frietchie,' with their quotable lines. His famous work 'Snowbound' was published in 1866. Whittier was also one of the most eloquent voices in the abolitionist cause, and on at least one occasion he was mobbed for his outspoken views.
