Walt Whitman Birthplace - View this location on map The birthplace one of America's great poet's, Walt Whitman, the house is an interesting example of unusual American architecture. Built c. 1819 by Whitman's father, this newly restored farmhouse is a New York State Historic Site and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The site houses historic nineteenth-century furniture, including an old schoolmaster's desk. Walt Whitman State Historic Site also features an interpretive center which includes more than 100 portraits, original letters, manuscripts, and artifacts.
