In 1887, Alexander Graham Bell (1847-1922) founded the Volta Bureau as an instrument 'for the increase and diffusion of knowledge relating to the Deaf.' The Bureau merged with the American Association for the Promotion and Teaching of Speech to the Deaf in 1908. The Volta Bureau continues its work in aiding the deaf.
