In 1899, the navy commissioned New York architect Ernest Flagg to design a new academic complex, and the result is one of the country's finest expressions of monumental Beaux-Arts architecture. The domed chapel (1904-1908) rises 210 feet to the top of its lantern and, with the dome of the Maryland Statehouse, dominates the Annapolis skyline.
