United States Naval Academy - View this location on map

Established in Annapolis in 1845, the Naval Academy has played a pivotal role in American naval affairs, graduating career officers well versed in both military and academic studies throughout its history. In 1899, the navy commissioned New York architect Ernest Flagg to design a new academic complex, and the result is one of the country's finest expressions of monumental Beaux-Arts architecture. The domed chapel (1904-1908) rises 210 feet to the top of its lantern and, with the dome of the Maryland Statehouse, dominates the Annapolis skyline. John Paul Jones, 'father of the American navy,' is buried in the crypt.
