United States Department of the Treasury - View this location on map

This impressive Greek Revival building housing the Treasury Department was begun in 1836 from designs by Robert Mills and completed, wing by wing, by three other supervising architects of the Treasury, 35 years later. Its most imposing feature is a 466-foot Ionic colonnade along Fifteenth Street. Mills's design was originally executed in standstone, but in 1908 this was replaced with granite. This building was a strong influence on the architecture of the period.
