Spencer Carriage House and Stable - View this location on map

Built in 1905 for Southern Railway president Samuel Spencer, this combined carriage house and stable is a large and impressive example of its type. Such buildings were once an essential support facility for the wealthy residents of the city's mansions. The building is also notable as the work of John McGregor, a local 'master builder' active from the 1870s to 1911. The structure is 2 stories, of red brick in a utilitarian design with modest brick detailing, a hipped slate roof, and cupolas.
