Peabody Museum of Salem - View this location on map

Founded in 1799 by the East India Marine Society, this is the oldest continuously-operated museum in the U.S. East India Marine Hall (1824-25), which houses a collection covering New England maritime history, Pacific Ethnology, and the natural history of Essex County, was the first structure built specifically for the organization. The Society's collection and hall were acquired in 1867 by the Peabody Academy of Science.
