Joseph Gales School - View this location on map This twelve-room schoolhouse is one of few buildings to survive from Swampoodle, the old largely Irish and Italian working-class neighborhood around the Government Printing Office. Erected in 1881, it is the product of an effort to develop an improved prototype for local schools at the direction of Congress, the design was by the Architect of the Capitol, Edward Clark. Gales School still commands a prominent site near Union Station. The austere Romanesque Revival building is faced in pressed brick, with molded beltcoursing and a massive sandstone entranceway.
