The first Catholic girls school in the United States, and among the first in America (established as the Georgetown Academy for Young Ladies), established by religious women in 1799; received first American charter of the Order of the Visitation in 1816; mother house for 13 convents; also housed Saint Joseph's Benevolent School c.1800-1918; associated with John Carroll and Leonard Neale, first U.S. Bishops; 14 contributing buildings built from 1819 to 1932.
