Emerald Mound Site - View this location on map

Emerald Mound is a late Mississippian Period archeological site (1200-1730 AD) which represents the dynamic adaptability of people who lived along the lower Mississippi River and who were infuenced by the complex temple-building societies from the north. It is an earthwork second only in size within the U.S. to Monks Mound at Cahokia, Illinois. Its builders were horticulturalists and hunter-gatherers who were probably organized into villages and provinces.
