Ebenezer United Methodist Church - View this location on map

This 1897 Romanesque Revival building by architects Crump & Palmer is the third church built on this site by Capitol Hill s oldest African-American congregation, formed in 1827. The church split from the integrated Ebenezer congregation, which was founded in 1805 and housed in the city's first Methodist church (built 1811). The new congregation known as Little Ebenezer first worshipped in a frame church on this site. The brick church that replaced it 1870 was the home of city's first public school for black children, established in 1864-65.
