Castro Theatre - Picture Palace and SF Landmark - View this location on map

429 Castro St.
Only place in town where you can see the Jewish Film Festival, the German Film Festival, the SF Independent Film Festival and the Canine Film Festival. Built in 1922 at a cost of $300,000, this well-preserved theater boasts 1600 seats and a Wurlitzer organ that rises on a pneumatic lift before each movie. The exterior looks like a Spanish cathedral - the interior exhibits art deco, Moorish and Mexican influences. Great spot for indie films as well as foreign flicks and black and white classics. Don't miss the Sing-a-longs - Sound of Music and Grease are popular. www.thecastrotheatre.com
