Barton, Clara, House - View this location on map ![]() Clara Barton was the 'Angel of the Battlefield' to both sides during the Civil War. Exhausted by her work healing the troops, she went to Switzerland to regain her health, but instead found herself on other battlefields, this time in the Franco-Prussian war. Impressed with the work of the International Red Cross during that conflict, she became the major figure in the founding of the American Red Cross. Barton spent the last 20 years of her life in this house, which also housed the national headquarters of the organization from 1897 until 1904. 5801 Oxford Road, Glen Echo, Maryland Historical |
