'Starting at a trailhead just past the Palomarin Field Station, hike 2.6 miles to Bass Lake, one of the few freshwater swimming spots in Point Reyes. September and October are warm months here, and a rope swing on the lake's edge will make you feel like Tom Sawyer. For a less strenuous walk, start at the Bear Valley Visitor Center near the town of Olema (415-464-5100) and follow the Earthquake Trail, which winds directly over the San Andreas Fault. Signs explain the plate tectonics at work beneath your feet. Illustrations show what the West Coast looked like eons ago, and how it may look in the distant future.
